In 2000, diamond production was estimated at 110 million carats valued at $7.9 billion ( US), and in 2001, the Mining Journal estimated that 110 million carats were mined with an estimated value of $7.3 billion ( US). The World Diamond Council estimated that natural diamond production in 1999 was more than 111 million carats valued at $7.4 billion ( US). Diamonds are mined from at least 20 countries the leading producers of natural diamond are Australia, Botswana, Canada, South Africa, Russia and Zaire.
